Carolyn Shantz, CPA, CMI

EVP Revenue and Head of Sales & Use Tax

Carolyn Shantz, CPA, CMI is Executive Vice President of Revenue and the Sales and Use Tax Practice at Merit Advisors, LLC and is responsible for the firm’s overall revenue as well as the operations of the Sales and Use Tax Practice. Carolyn’s expertise is focused on providing sales/use and associated transaction tax services for her clients primarily in the oil and gas industry. She enjoys the long-term relationships she has developed and maintained with her clients and seeing their satisfaction upon the successful completion of each project.

Before joining Merit, Carolyn served as Tax Manager at Superior Energy Services from 2012-2017. Before her time at Superior Energy, she was a Managing Director at Alvarez and Marsal from 2004 to 2012. Carolyn served as a State and Local Tax Senior Manager at Ernst & Young from 1994-2004, and a Sales Tax Auditor with the office of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts from 1993-1994.

In 2016, Carolyn received the Distinguished Service Award from the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT). She is very active in IPT, serving as an IPT Sales Tax School II Instructor since 2018, a board member from 2014-2017, and currently on the board. Carolyn also served as a committee member, Vice-Chair, and Chair of several IPT Sales Tax Symposiums and Annual Conferences.

Carolyn earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Houston. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the state of Texas and a Sales Tax Certified Member of IPT (CMI).
